August 11 is a day to remember for competitors in sports which don't get as much fanfare as others, as they rightly took centre stage with some stunning accomplishments in Olympic Games gone by. Outside of the world's greatest sporting show, there was the birth of a Bianconeri tactician who is busy masterminding another season in Turin.
1967 - Former
AC Milan coach and current
Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri was born in Livorno. A talented playmaker as a player, it would be his exploits in a suit that would earn him the most praise. His tactical intelligence won him a Serie A title at Milan, and in two years at the Bianconeri so far he has scooped five honours and reached a Champions League final.
1984 - World record breaking shot put athlete Alessandro Andrei blew away the competition in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, launching his third attempt 21 metres and 26 centimetres to put him atop the podium wearing a gold medal. His American competitors fought back with some big throws of their own in the final stages, but none near Andrei's effort as he won by 17 centimetres.
2008 - Italy enjoyed a glut of gold medals in three specialist sports at the Olympic Games in Beijing - archery, fencing and judo. The men's archery team claimed a silver as they lost their final round against South Korea whilst Valentina Vezzali won a gold and Margherita Granbassi a bronze in the women's foil fencing event. Ending a wonderful day was Giula Quintavalle, who won the women's 57kg judo.
2012 - A packed day at the Olympic Games in London saw Italy emerge successful in fighting sports - winning medals in both boxing and taekwondo as the Games started to wind down. Judges ruled that taekwondo star Carlo Molfetta won his gold medal bout with Anthony Obame on superiority rules, whilst heavyweight boxer Clemente Russo lost his match but still brought home a silver.
