August 5 has been a special day for female Italian competitors, with many reasons to celebrate over the years. However, it has also seen the men begin European campaigns at a point that seems very early indeed.
1936 - In the 80m Hurdles semi-final at the Berlin Olympics, Italy's Trebisonda Valla shatters the world record held by Germany's Ruth Engelhard before going on to claim the gold medal the following day. Trebisonda's unusual name was due to the fact that her father thought the Turkish city of Trabzon was one of the most beautiful in the world.
1988 - A new star of Italian swimming is born in the form of Federica Pellegrini. It takes the Mirano native only 16 years to make a splash on the world stage, winning an Olympic silver medal. Now an icon in the pool, Pellegrini will be Italy's flag bearer at the 2016 Olympics.
2000 - Maura Viceconte wins the Vienna Marathon with a time of 2 hours 23 minutes 47 and in doing so, breaks the Italian record by a clear 90 seconds. Viceconte is in a rich vein of form, but is only able to claim a 12th place finish in the Sydney Olympics. She retains her record until 2012, when Valeria Straneo breaks it.
2010 -
Juventus follow up their 2-0 victory in the first leg of the Europa League qualifying tie with Shamrock Rovers with a 1-0 win at home to ease into the play-off round. While Amauri was the hero in Dublin, Alessandro Del Piero scores the only goal of a match played in Modena to see the Bianconeri through.
