August 6 has been yet another day of Italian triumph, with the peninsula's sporting greats imposing themselves on the rest of the world on both the football field and in Olympic sports. 1928 - Italian cyclists win a third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit; Giacomo Gaioni, Cesare Facciani, Mario Lusiani and Luigi Tasselli beat the Netherlands by over four seconds in the final to impose Italy's dominance on the event, which was to continue to the next Olympiad. 2009 - Roma smash Gent 7-1 in the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie against Gent. Already 3-1 to the good, the Giallorossi laboured to a narrow first-half lead before taking control after the break. In the end, both sides attacked with vigour and Daniele De Rossi ended with a brace, as Roma earned a 10-2 aggregate victory. 2012 - Niccolo Campriani breaks the Olympic Record for the three positions 50m trap in the games in London. While his prone score is only 13th best, he leads the field in both standing and kneeling to claim not just the record but a gold medal, as well. 2015 - After going into their qualifying tie with Vojvodina as the seeded side, Sampdoria crash out of the Europa League despite a 2-0 win in the second leg. A 4-0 defeat in the first leg in Turin puts paid to the Blucerchiati's hopes of reaching the group stage as both sides win their away games.
