August 7 has often brought the very best out of Italian sides, who have earned some spectacular triumphs on this date. While these have occasionally heralded brighter things to come, most notably when in Olympic competition, there have been dramatic denouements in their own right, as well.
1936 - The Azzurri really get into their stride at the Berlin Mommsenstadion, shattering Japanese Olympic hopes with an 8-0 win in the quarter-finals of football. Annibale Frossi continues his good form with a hat-trick, only to be overshadowed by Carlo Biagi who grabs four goals as Italy march on, eventually winning the competition.
2008 - Pierluigi Casiraghi's side open their Olympic account with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Honduras in Qinhuangdao. Sebastian Giovinco's livewire performance is the pick of the Italian team, his opener being followed by Giuseppe Rossi and the equally excellent Robert Acquafresca as the Azzurri start with 3 points.
2014 -
Torino complete a comfortable 7-0 aggregate victory over Swedish hopefuls Brommapojkarna to qualify for the playoff round of the Europa League. Following a 3-0 win in Stockholm, the Granata waste no time putting the tie to bed. A Kristinn Jonsson own goal after just four minutes is followed by strikes from Matteo Darmian, Fabio Quagliarella and Josef Martinez as Gianpiero Ventura's men earn a meeting with RNK Split.
2015 - A stunning end to the third place match in the World Aquatics Championships water polo competition sees the Italian women's team edge out Australia by virtue of a penalty shootout. The two sides couldn't be separated over four quarters with the game ending 7-7, but when Hannah Buckling saw her effort saved, Arianna Garibotti was able to convert to claim the bronze medal for the Azzurri.
