An eventful day in the middle of August took us to four different sports - as there was triumph, optimism, hope and mourning in a real mix of emotions. The founder of an Italian institution passed away and allowed us to remember his work, and the same day six years later on only reminded audiences of the nation's lasting success. Crespo Parma 1996 - Parma decided to gamble by bringing in a young Argentine striker going by the name of Hernan Crespo. The transfer initially backfired as he went on a six month goal drought, but eventually came very good indeed and netted the club a world record transfer fee. His adventures also took him to Chelsea, Inter and AC Milan where trophy success swiftly followed - including a treble of Serie A titles at the Nerazzurri. 1998 - The founder of Scuderia Ferrari motor racing team, and subsequently the rest of the luxury car brand, died aged 90. Enzo Ferrari was widely known as il Commendatore, and created the company in 1929 after a dinner in Bologna, where he was inspired to create a team of over 40 racers to enter into competitions. Ferrari is the only team to have competed in every season of Formula 1 since its inception in 1950. 2004 - Italy ended the opening day of the Olympic Games with two gold medals to their name - coming in the sports of cycling and fencing. Paolo Bettini won the men's road race by a second after a thrilling final sprint to get us underway, and then Aldo Montana saw gold in the men's sabre event. It would be the first two of 32 medals altogether for Italy in these Games. Italy's Lorenzo Insigne celebrates after scoring during a friendly soccer match between Italy and Argentina, at Rome's Olympic stadium, Wednesday, Aug.14, 2013. (AP Photo/Andrew Medichini) 2013 - Lorenzo Insigne came off the bench to score in just his second appearance for Italy, but he was unable to stop the Azzurri from slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Argentina. Italy welcomed the Argentines to Rome for the fixture, with the visitors missing crucial player Lionel Messi. However goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega quickly erased the appearance of a gap, with Insigne's consolation coming 14 minutes from time.
