Jermain Defoe England

August 15 has been a mixed day for Italian sports down the years; the victories have been either minor or came a long time ago. Meanwhile, some of the more modern triumphs have brought eventual disappointment of their own. 1936 – World champions Italy needed extra time overcome a stubborn Austrian challenge. Annibale Frossi’s strike looked to have given the Azzurri the win with 20 minutes to go, however Karl Kainberger levelled things up nine minutes later. Eventually, Frossi’s seventh goal of the competition, two minutes into the added period, earned Italy the gold. 2006 – Stefano Garzelli wins the Tre Valli Varesine, outsprinting fellow Italian Rinaldo Nocentini to retain the crown he had won the previous year. Although the Liquigas rider opens his Trittico Lombardo with a win, he is unable to usurp Lorenzo Bernucci over the three days. GWG predictor 2008 – Elena Romagnolo qualifies for the first ever women’s 3000m Steeplechase Final at an Olympic games after finishing fifth in the third heat in Beijing. In doing so, she wipes 27 seconds off the Italian record, previously held by Marzena Michalska. 2012 – Makeshift England and Italy sides face off in a friendly at the Wankdorf Stadium. After the teams traded set piece goals from Daniele De Rossi and Phil Jagielka, a Jermain Defoe thunderbolt sealed a victory for the Three Lions.
