![Tevez 2013]()
A new
Serie A season kicked off on this day and it was a day to remember for a debutant in the league, whilst within a few hours supporters of another top flight club were celebrating for more personal reasons.
Elsewhere, a
Formula 1 original passed away whilst the Beijing Olympic Games closed in style for Italy and their top boxer.
1997 - Italian motor racing driver Luigi Villoresi, who competed in the inaugural Formula 1 season for Ferrari, died aged 88 in Modena. With Formula 1 arriving he made the jump to Ferrari from Maserati, but struggled to replicate the winning formula he found back in the days of the Grand Prix schedule. He showcased his incredible agility in 1953 at Monza, making the crowd rise to their feet in applause after he swerved clear of the track in response to noticing an accident by the finishing line.
2008 - Roberto Cammarelle won Olympic gold in Beijing as he beat fellow super heavyweight Zhang Zhilei. The referee stopped the contest in round four to save Zhilei from being knocked out - awarding the victory to Cammarelle after he also sent his semi final opponent to a similar fate. It was the Italian's second Olympic medal after winning bronze in Athens four years prior.
2013 - Carlos Tevez netted the first goal of the new Serie A season as he fired reigning champions
Juventus to a narrow 1-0 victory over
Sampdoria. The striker proved himself not to be a slow starter on his Serie A debut, tapping into an empty net after Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal combined magnificently. Later that day,
Hellas Verona would shock
AC Milan 2-1 and pile on the misery for increasingly pessimistic Rossoneri supporters.
2013 - Cagliari fans rejoiced after they heard the news that their football club would be returning to the city. Due to a lack of up-to-date safety standards at the Stadio Sant'Elia, the Rossoblu were forced to play over 1,000 kilometres away in Trieste for the 2012/13 season. The renovation allowed for thousands of extra fans to sit inside the stadium - the capacity now standing at 16,000.
