![Hamsik v Palermo]()
Today is a popular day in the Serie A schedule, with the season returning to the swing of things with its regular packed out weekend schedule.
There were wins for three of Italy's top clubs, as they brushed aside preseason doubts to get three important points on the board. Elsewhere in history, a new football club was born in Florence.
1926 - The football club currently known as
Fiorentina was founded, with their first president being Marquis Luigi Ridolfi who held his post for 15 years. They initially wore the colours of white and red, and would win the
Coppa Italia in 1940. After winning
Serie B twice, their first
Serie A triumph was in 1956. To date, they have a combined nine national honours to their name - plus one European honour in the Cup Winners' Cup.
2001 - Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet scored two goals each as
Juventus romped to a 4-0 victory over Venezia - a club who would finish rock bottom come the end of the season. Trezeguet scored twice within 60 seconds to give the Bianconeri a cushioned advantage, with his partner in crime Del Piero scoring one in each half to further drive the dagger home on the opening day.
2007 - A quickfire double from Kaka saw
AC Milan waltz stylishly past
Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. After the new Serie A season kicked off the day prior this was the two clubs' opener, and Milan were clearly the sharper of the pairing. Massimo Ambrosini opened the scoring and Kaka then snagged his brace, making it 3-0 at half time and that's how the scoreline remained.
2012 - Napoli started the new Serie A season in style, visiting the Stadio Renzo Barbera in
Palermo and coming home with all three points. The Partenopei eased to a 3-0 victory, with Marek Hamsik opening the scoring in first half stoppage time. Christian Maggio and then Edinson Cavani also joined in the fun, as the Neapolitans went joint top for the time being.
